New York Judge Denies Media Request to Broadcast Trump’s Arraignment

Former President Donald Trump’s arraignment in a New York state court will not be broadcasted by news outlets, as confirmed by a judge on Monday night. However, the judge has granted permission for a select group of photographers to take pictures inside the courtroom before the formal proceedings commence.

Acting New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan rejected the pleas from various media organizations, including CNN, to broadcast the significant event. While Trump’s arraignment, like most arraignments held in the Manhattan courthouse, is a public proceeding, cameras are typically not allowed inside.

Nonetheless, the judge has granted access to five pool photographers to capture still images at the outset of the proceedings, “until they are instructed to leave the jury box by court personnel.”

Earlier in the day, Donald Trump legal team urged the judge to reject the media’s request for live cameras in the courtroom. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office informed the judge that they did not take a position on the matter.

The media outlets seeking camera access argued that “the gravity of this proceeding… and the consequent need for the broadest possible public access, cannot be overstated.”

Presently, Donald Trump is in Manhattan in preparation for the arraignment. Last week, a grand jury indicted the former president.

Moreover, the arraignment is expected to reveal the unsealed criminal charges against Trump, which his lawyers and the public have yet to see.

The indictment is a result of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into hush-money payments, made during the 2016 presidential campaign, to women who alleged having extramarital affairs with Trump—an accusation he denies.

Trump maintains his innocence, and his legal team declared last week that they would vigorously contest the charges in an effort to have them dropped.
